Renfield Review
Description: In a modern-day tale of Dracula’s loyal servant Renfield, the assistant to the most narcissistic boss of all time is forced to provide his master with the spoils he wants and do whatever he says, no matter what at times to humiliate But now, after centuries of slavery, Renfield is ready to see if there is still life beyond the shadow of the Dark Prince.
Do I need to tell you anything else about Nickola Cage’s Dracula?I think not, you already know how it will be, here is Cage-Man – the only such actor that I could probably watch eating straight breakfast. And whenever the film allows us to admire Cagu, he squeezes everything he can out of his performance. However, the other actors are also not far behind here. Dracula is hard to beat, but Reinfield, the film’s main character, was charismatic, funny, and unstoppable. Overall, this story isn’t really trying to be Oscar-level or surprising, but it feels like the creators just want you to have a good time. After all, it’s so fun to watch movies that don’t try to prove something…. I miss such movies…
What is the most important thing in a horror comedy? Well, probably logically – good elements of horror and humor. So, although the film is not really „scary”, there is no shortage of blood and quite „terrible” scenes here. And the elements of humor, although they are missed a few times, are very well worked out here. Overall, it’s a very entertaining and even positive film, which, well, it might sound strange, acts as a good motivational speech. I’ll admit that the very idea of using Dracula and Reinfield’s relationship as an allegory for a real-life toxic relationship not only works almost perfectly, but also creates a lot of silly situations that are still stuck in my head as I write this review. It’s not a perfect movie, but I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Nic Cage or macabre humor.
This is a B-class movie, so don’t expect very realistic effects or blood. Everything is overprinted here for a reason. HOWEVER, give me more Cage-Dracula, please, at least a little more. Honestly, I would remove a few characters or scenes from this movie just to have Dracula „scoot” around the screen more. While the second one with the police officers wasn’t bad, that time would have been better spent showing Dracula and Reinfield’s relationship or backstory. With such good characters and world, the film sometimes spends time on just rather „boring” things. I can’t vouch for it, but it feels like the second story was tacked on a bit due to the lack of time on the original film, but even now, Reinfield is a pretty short story.
Overall – 8/10
