Nimona Review

Description: When a knight in a futuristic medieval world is wrongly accused of a crime he didn’t commit, the only one who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona, a mischievous shape-shifting teenage girl he’s sworn to destroy.

The tone and speed of the films are very important to me. Well SPEED is in the sense of the layout of the story and the characters. There are very slow films in which you just have to drink rich emotion and thought. However, there are such movies that seem to never stop for a second, and when you watch them, you feel as if you are holding on to the frame while running on a merry-go-round. Nimona is exactly the kind of film that, with its colors, amazing animation, and characters, just flies by and you don’t even notice that it’s over. But personally, one of the strongest aspects of this movie is the way it looks. You can immediately feel the influence of Into The Spider-Verse here, and I still thank that movie for that. Nimona isn’t afraid to change the style, frame rate, or color contrast if it means a more impressive final version.

One thing I hate is the phrase ‘made for kids’, it can be silly. NO, creating for children does not mean treating them as idiots or as incapable creatures. It is possible to create simply, repeat the main ideas, but never make the excuse that it is suitable for children in any way. So it’s nice when Nimona is a fun but rather clever story that doesn’t humiliate its audience for a moment and in some places presents quite complex mature ideas. Here is another plus point of the film, we can find ideas of politics and social justice, but not too much. All these things are simply presented and that’s it, no one beats you over the head with them saying – you see, this is how the world should be, not otherwise! Overall, the story is very positive and overflowing with love for both the characters themselves and the audience. You know that feeling when you write something stupid and you smile imagining how someone will read it laughing… good feeling.

In reality, the general story is quite simple, you quickly understand what and how it will happen. However, this is not SNOBU CINEMA, it’s all forgivable. In some places it can feel lost, like it’s not really clear where or what the characters will do next. Also, some may not like the mix of 2D animation and 3D, but this style the more I LOVE it. Overall, though with a few nuances, Nimona is a scrappy little demon that will make you have a good time whether you want it or not!
