Tetris Review
Description: Video game designer Henk Rogers seeks to secure global rights for Tetris (1984), leading to tense negotiations in the Soviet Union, involving creators, government, and corporate intrigues.
This is a film that loves video games so sincerely that, as they say, even to the point of bone pain. Throughout the film, no matter what happens, the main idea remains – Glory to video games and their creators. That’s how you will find a lot of actors who are only interested in money, like the company EA now. However, the magic of Tetris is unforgettable throughout the film, and it is not for nothing that the game has become perhaps the most famous in the world. The actors who play the main characters not only do their job well, but are so charismatic that by the middle of the film you realize you’re actually rooting for them. Here is a real struggle of small developers not only against the USSR, but also against the American capitalists. And what’s strange is that all the characters are shown in a rather nice balance, when even the people on the side of the USSR are not completely bad.
So… the movie starts with just worshiping the old ones with a game, well Tetris in particular. But I’ll be honest, at the end I watched one of the most intense Cold War thrillers. There are times when even the butt jaw is pulled so that only the characters can succeed. And I can’t even tell you when this genre change happened. Make no mistake, Tetris itself is never forgotten here, and the film manages to perfectly juggle tense moments, silly jokes, or just great scenes about game-making. Overall the movie is well shot and put together. But apart from that, Tetris has its own style, speed and color. Not a single moment in the film feels like something was done on a budget or put together simply out of necessity. I’m kidding myself again, you could have given me a head start, but I never would have said that Tetris would be one of my favorite movies of the year.
I honestly don’t have a single complaint about this movie. Could some places have been longer or shorter? Of course, the actors were chosen differently? Sure, this could be an eternal debate. But the only feeling after watching the movie was – Wow… I want more. I want more movies that really show love for video games, I want more fun and exaggerated stories, I want more ADVENTURE. Well, remember those times when every movie didn’t try to prove its political message or how society „should” work. This is how the movie distorts, you raise relay facts for that, but honestly that’s why I watch movies, if I wanted „cheesy” reality I’d look at your Facebook posts….
Overall – 10/10
